Cupcakes sweeten senior spirits

By Kaitlyn Griffith

I love my seniors. I love them so much that I’ve decided to give each and every one a cupcake that I made especially for them. So, I bought seven boxes of cake mix, two jars of frosting, and an industrial size shaker of multiple sprinkles, and went to work. I’m currently half way through week two of this process and I can honestly say this is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. It’s right up there with taking Latin and buying that retractable light saber with realistic sound effects.

It’s my goal to make each and every senior  feel special and appreciated, and I’m told I’ve been successful. I’ve given 20 cupcakes to date, and the responses of my fellow seniors have been heartwarming. Molly Sova said I made her day, Megan Tessmer texted me hours after school thanking me once more for her sugary treat and Ellen McCormick looked as if she might cry after I handed her a cupcake sporting a lovely “E” delicately drawn in blue frosting.

I’ve received numerous hugs, thank you’s and electrifying grins. It’s absolutely remarkable to see the course of a person’s day completely shift with something as simple as a cupcake.

At first, no one knew why I was distributing cupcakes willy-nilly, but once I explained about my list and the Network’s website, the suspicious looks came to an end. In fact, I’ve been hearing about seniors anticipating their day of sweet delight.

Each one of my classmates is an integral part of our class. Every student is needed, and appreciated, and necessary to make this school what it is. These cupcakes are my way of saying, “Thanks for all that you do,” and I hope that’s the feeling people get when I hand them one before homeroom.

If giving baked goods to seniors has made such a positive impact, just think about what else we can accomplish. If I can change someone’s day with a cupcake, it’s more than possible for every other Marian girl to make a positive impact as well. Smile at someone walking down a hallway. Give a compliment to someone you don’t often speak with. And hugs are always good in my book.

If this venture in random acts of kindness has taught me anything, it’s this: little changes can make big differences. So I pass the challenge on to my readers. I’ll still be giving out cupcakes, but what will you do? There’s always something that needs to be done to make life a little better. Now is your time to find out what that is.
